100 Bird species

Date: 03-11-2014

The Hartbeespoort Dam area is famous for its abundance of birds and at our Eco Lodge we have kept track of all the species seen in our 19 ha bushveld and gardens on the foothills of the Magaliesberg. Over the last year we have recorded many beautiful birds with the Black-backed Puffback being number 100 recently on the list. Since the beginning of our count we have started to offer internships to Forestry and Ecology & Wildlife students from Europe which has resulted in great work experience for them in a foreign country and their different projects have improved the biodiversity in our veld. Some of the birds that can be seen regularly at our Eco Lodge are Brown-hooded Kingfisher, African Paradise Flycatcher, Southern Grey Hornbill, a variety of Weavers and of course Ostriches. Besides that, quite often we see Cape Vultures flying over on their way from the breeding colony to the VulPro Vulture Restaurant.
